やむ【止む･已む】

〔雨が〕 stop (falling); let up; leave off; 〔止まる〕 stop; cease; 〔風などがおさまる〕 subside; abate; die [calm] down; drop; pass; lull; 〔終わる〕 end; cease; come to an end [a close, a halt, a stop]; 〔静まる･済む〕 be over; 〔にわかに止む〕 drop down; fall; 〔(音などが)消える〕 die [fade] out [away, down].

●やむに止まれぬ ⇒やむにやまれぬ, やむにやまれず

・やむを得ず ⇒やむをえず

・やむを得ない[得ぬ] ⇒やむをえない[えぬ].

●この雨は午後にはやむでしょう. The rain should stop [let up] in the afternoon.

・雨は降ったりやんだりしている. It's been raining off and on [on and off].

・雨がやんだ. It's stopped raining. | The rain has stopped [let up].

・雨はなかなかやまない. It's still raining. | The rain hasn't stopped yet. | The rain just won't [doesn't want to] let up.

・ようやく階下の騒ぎがやんだ. The noise downstairs finally died down.

・砲声がはたとやんだ. The roar of artillery suddenly died down.

・風は一向にやむ気配がなかった. The wind gave no sign of dying down.

・撃ちてしやまん. Do or die.

…てやまない 〔切に…する〕 earnestly do; sincerely do.

●貴殿のご平癒を祈ってやみません. I pray earnestly for your recovery.

やむことがない 〔まったく中断しない〕 continuously; unceasingly.

●警察の容疑者追及はやむことがなかった. The police were unrelenting in their search for the suspect.

やむことなく 〔休みなく〕 continuously; without stopping; without pause.

●雪はやむことなく一週間降り続けた. The snow continued falling for a solid week.

・その後も事態はやむことなく急展開を続けた. Afterward the situation continued to change rapidly.
